Metro Vancouver is well-served by a thriving collection of Model United Nations conferences offered throughout the year to high school and university students.
The interconnected nature of our world has made the task of global education of increasing importance. Research has shown that greater exposure to issues leads to a better chance that those more aware will take action to make the world a better place. These conferences provide enormous opportunity to engage young people for this purpose.
The Vancouver Branch of the United Nations Association in Canada is committed to the education and engagement of Canadians in the work of the UN and the critical international issues that affect us all.
UPCOMING MODEL UN CONFERENCES
On Sunday, September 18th, Youth Leadership Society of British Columbia conference (YLSBC) hosted its first ever Model United Nations Conference. The event was held at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam, from 9AM to approximately 6PM. The conference featured a keynote address by Coquitlam Mayor, Richard Stewart. Students connected with these leaders, while learning the art of debate, reasoning and diplomatic proceedings. The cost was only $30 and includes lunch and materials.
The 11th annual Vancouver Youth Model United Nations conference took place between October 28th and 30th at the Westin Hotel in Whistler, BC. Youth aged 12 to 16 were welcome to register. VYMUN is committed since 2005 to giving youth delegates the opportunity to explore foreign affairs, learn the art of diplomacy, and develop and hone public speaking skills. This is an event held in conjunction with West Point Grey Academy (WPGA).
North Vancouver Model United Nations is a student-run Model United Nations conference which took place on Saturday, November 5 to Sunday November 6, 2016. Delegates were challenged to debate a wide range of topics including peace and security, human rights, environmental issues, economic development, and globalization.
ConnectMUN aims to spread the word of MUN around the Lower Mainland through presentations at schools, mock sessions and tutorials. Regardless of experience level, by involving themselves with the Connect Program, delegates can gain a higher level of expertise, learn the finer details of MUN, and feel securely prepared at any conference. The most recent conference was held from November 18 to November 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Vancouver. The theme was International Journalism and the Media.
The Canadian International Model United Nations conference will take place in May 19th to 21st, 2017 at the Pinnacle Vancouver Harbourfront Hotel. Check the website for more information. Founded in 2012 with the purpose of providing students with an educational and inspiring weekend, CAIMUN is an event offered by a non-profit society which has grown to include more than five hundred enthusiastic delegates.
Richmond Model United Nations (RICHMUN) is a Model United Nations conference which is held in Richmond, British Columbia. This conference is designed for novice debaters to give an impression of what the United Nations is to youth from 12-18 years old.
The conference is held in a government building, the Richmond City Hall, in order for the delegates to have a professional experience. The Richmond City Hall venue is situated in on No. 3 road near the skytrain and bus station. The conference caters to high school students living in the Greater Vancouver region and will consist of one day of lively debate on issues pertaining to health, economics, security and politics.
