The United Nations has an important and continuing role to play in promoting and protecting Indigenous rights.

UNDRIP does not yet have any force of international law but it is a significant step towards reconciliation, social justice and the upholding of human rights. Indigenous rights are human rights.

Article 41 of UNDRIP states that “the organs and specialized agencies of the United Nations system and other intergovernmental organizations shall contribute to the full realization of the provisions…through the mobilization…of financial cooperation and technical assistance. Ways and means of ensuring participation of indigenous peoples on issues affecting them shall be established.”

On the heels of new federal legislation passed May 30, 2018, to ensure that Canada’s laws are in harmony with UNDRIP, British Columbia has promised to introduce legislation which will endorse UNDRIP.
