The Vancouver Branch of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC-Vancouver) recently sponsored the Canadian High Schools Model United NationsConference (CAHSMUN) which took place between March 2-4, 2012. UNAC-Vancouver was pleased to be able to provide a grant for the purpose of financial assistance to students who would otherwise not have been able to attend due to financial obstacles.
UNA Canada and its many branches are committed to helping others to develop the tools and skills necessary to confront some of the world’s most intractable political and developmental problems. We believe that Model United Nations conferences are superb opportunities to do just that.
The recent CAHSMUN conference was very successful and showcased the talents of several hundred participating secondary school students. Student leaders organized and implemented the entire event, demonstrating their high degree of commitment to global issues and awareness, and to an unforgettable experience for students.
Several of our board members were able to attend the CAHSMUN event. Two of the members were George Somerwill, a 15-year veteran of the United Nations Secretariat and Karen Truscott, legal counsel at the Department of Justice who were invited to attend as guest speakers for the student audience.
Their presentations will be summarized in a separate post.
